How has DUPUY improved dust extraction during paper shredding?
Industrial Paper Shredding: The Challenge of Fine, Combustible Dust
In industrial paper shredding processes, breaking down the material into smaller pieces inevitably generates significant amounts of light, fine dust. These particles tend to disperse into the air and settle on equipment surfaces and in surrounding areas, making effective and continuous management necessary.
This situation also characterized the production process at a company located in Hungary, where an industrial shredder constantly generated fine dust during paper processing.
The quantity and characteristics of the particles produced required an extraction system capable of operating directly while the shredder was running, preventing dust from spreading throughout the work area.
Another key consideration was the flammable nature of paper dust, which required a solution that met the safety requirements for potentially explosive atmospheres.
The customer’s goal was to integrate a dust collection system into the existing process, maintaining controlled operating conditions without compromising production continuity.

Capture large amounts of dust without interrupting the shredding process
The main issue faced by the customer was the constant generation of very fine dust during the operation of the industrial shredder.
The fragmentation of the paper caused fine particles to scatter throughout the production area, posing a risk of buildup on surrounding surfaces and equipment.
To effectively manage this situation, it was necessary to identify a dust collection system capable of ensuring continuous dust capture directly at the source.
The flammable nature of the material also introduced a specific safety requirement: the solution had to be suitable for the operating conditions of an ATEX Zone 22-classified application, helping to limit the accumulation and dispersion of particles.
Another challenge involved integrating the system with existing equipment. The customer needed a solution that would not interfere with operations within the plant and that could operate reliably even during continuous production cycles.
A continuous extraction system for controlling dust at the source
In the industrial paper pulping process, the production of dust is not an occasional occurrence, but a direct and continuous consequence of the manufacturing process.
For this reason, a management approach based solely on periodic cleaning would not have been sufficient to meet the need to capture the particles as they are generated.
The customer needed a system capable of extracting dust directly from the shredder, preventing it from spreading into the surrounding areas and minimizing the buildup of deposits.
The presence of combustible dust also made it essential to adopt a solution that complied with the ATEX classification required for the application.
The goal, therefore, was to meet three requirements: continuous suction, a reliable filtration system, and integration with the existing production process.
The installation of a dedicated dust collector would have made it possible to address these issues through continuous dust collection, reducing the need for manual intervention and helping to maintain more controlled operating conditions.
DUPUY DEDUST 8 ATEX Z22: Industrial dust collection integrated into the grinding process
To meet the customer’s needs, DUPUY installed the DEDUST 8 ATEX Z22, an industrial dust collector designed to capture fine dust in applications that require continuous operation.
The system is equipped with a 5.5-kW motor and delivers a maximum airflow of 5,400 m³/h, capabilities that allow it to handle the volume of particles generated during paper shredding.
One of the solution’s key features is the automatic pneumatic filter cleaning system, which helps maintain consistent suction performance during operation, minimizing the need for manual intervention.
To effectively integrate the dust collector into the production process, the unit was installed outside the plant, under a covered area, and connected to the shredder located inside via a network of fixed pipes.
This configuration allows for direct data acquisition from the processing machine, without taking up additional workspace within the production area.
The definitive solution was identified following a technical site visit conducted in Hungary in collaboration with the local distributor, Hardtest, which made it possible to define a configuration suited to the system’s characteristics and the customer’s specific needs.
The result is a dust collection system that is directly integrated into the grinding process, capable of ensuring continuous management of fine dust.
Continuous suction, less maintenance, and greater operational reliability
The installation of the DEDUST 8 ATEX Z22 has enabled the customer to effectively and continuously manage the fine dust generated during industrial paper shredding.
Direct collection at the source helps reduce the dispersion of particles in the production environment, improving operating conditions and ensuring compliance with the safety requirements for ATEX Zone 22 applications.
Thanks to its high airflow capacity and automatic pneumatic filter cleaning system, the dust collector maintains stable suction performance even during continuous operation, reducing the need for manual maintenance.
The outdoor installation, connected to the shredder via fixed piping, also made it possible to integrate the system without interfering with normal operations inside the plant.
The main benefits achieved:
- Continuous and effective extraction of the fine dust generated by the shredder.
- Reduction of dust dispersion and accumulation in the production environment.
- Improved safety conditions for an ATEX Zone 22 application.
- Consistent extraction performance thanks to automatic filter cleaning.
- Reduced need for manual maintenance.
- Direct integration into the production process via fixed piping.
- Greater operational reliability during grinding cycles.
The upgrade resulted in a more efficient and integrated extraction system, contributing to process continuity and the controlled management of combustible dusts.
